Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. CDVs featuring members of the honor guard that accompanied Lincoln's body from Washington, DC to Springfield, IL, & other key figures in charge of the funeral.

8 CDV portraits featuring the members of Lincoln's honor guard, including : Seated portrait of General Amos B. EATON in uniform. Uncredited, n.d. General Eaton was a West Point graduate and career officer in the US Army, achieving the rank of brevet major general before retiring in 1874. He served as a member of the honor guard as Commissary-General of Subsistence. -- 2 seated portraits of General John G. BARNARD in uniform. Chicago, IL: S. M. Fassett AND New York: E. & H. T. Anthony, n.d. Fasset example signed on mount recto. General Barnard served as the Chief Engineer of the Army of the Potomac, the Department of Washington, and the armies in the field during the Civil War. He was also selected as a member of the honor guard for Lincoln's funeral. -- 2 seated portraits of General Daniel C. MCCALLUM in uniform. New York: Brady AND Chicago: S. M. Fassett, n.d. Brady example with 2-cent revenue stamp affixed to verso. General McCallum served as superintendent of the US Military Railroads during the Civil War. He participated in organizing the funeral and burial of Abraham Lincoln as well as serving as a member of the honor guard. -- Seated portrait of General David HUNTER in uniform with his sword between his legs. Chicago: S. M. Fassett, n.d. General Hunter also notably presided over the military commission that tried the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination. -- Bust portrait of General Edward D. TOWNSEND in uniform. Washington, DC: Brady, n.d. General Townsend was a West Point graduate and career officer long before the outbreak of Civil War. He served in the honor guard as a representative for the Secretary of War, and was eventually promoted to Adjutant General of the US Army. -- 2 portraits of General John C. CALDWELL. Bath, ME: William B. Stearn AND New York: Brady, n.d. General Caldwell saw heavy action during the Civil War, sustaining multiple wounds and also receiving criticism for his actions in multiple battles including at Gettysburg. He nevertheless was exonerated and served in Lincoln's honor guard representing the US Volunteers. -- Together, 9 CDVs.

SIGNED cabinet card half portrait of Edward David TOWNSEND, the logistical planner of Lincoln's funeral proceedings, who also served as Adjutant General of the US Army (1869-1880). Uncredited, n.d. Anthony (Brady negative). -- 5 CDVs of Bishop Matthew Simpson, who gave the sermon at Lincoln's funeral in Springfield. Imprints include E. & H. T. Anthony, E. R. Gard's Photographic Art Palace, Wm. Shew, and Fredricks & Co. -- Seated CDV portrait of Rear Admiral Charles Henry Davis, who was chosen to accompany the remains of Lincoln to Springfield as a representative of the Navy. New York: E. Anthony (Brady negative). -- Seated portrait of Dr. Phineas Gurley, who preached the funeral sermon in the White House East Room and prayed at the burial service in Springfield.
