[FLAGS]. 20-star American flag. Ca 1876 or later.
28 x 47 in. wool flag with 20 double-appliquéd linen stars machine sewn to a wool canton, configured in horizontal rows 5/5/5/5. The field consists of 13 machine-sewn wool stripes. The hoist is comprised of both cotton and denim fabric and includes three eyelets. Mississippi was admitted in 1817 as the 20th state, and this 20-star flag was likely made ca 1876 to celebrate the Centennial of American Independence.
Provenance: Found in a Bethel, Ohio residence, ca 1970s.
