Lot Description

[FLAGS]. 18-star American flag. Ca 1876-1890s.


Approx. 70 by 110 in. wool flag with 18 double-appliquéd cotton stars machine sewn to a three-part wool canton, configured in horizontal rows 4/3/4/3/4. The field consists of 13 machine-sewn wool stripes. Cotton sleeve hoist with jute rope, stenciled "10 x 6," and initialed lightly, "GHW."

A rare flag, likely made between 1876 and the 1890s, to commemorate the statehood of Louisiana, which was admitted as the 18th state on 30 April 1812.
