The center of the tray decorated in filled-in lacquer incised on the interior with two birds flying amongst a gnarled tree and blossoming peonies, enclosed by four sinuous chi dragons, the border decorated with shaped panels each showing a striding dragon, set above an interlocking T ground, all reserved on a black lacquered ground, the exterior of the short walls incised with floral scrolls, the base lacquered black, fitted in a later fabric-covered storage box.
