The box of large rectangular form, the flat cover deeply and crisply carved with figures in a fenced terrace in front of a pavilion amongst tall trees and jagged rockwork, a scholar riding assisted by two attendants, accompanied by a boy carrying a qin, standing next to a deer; a lotus pond in the distance, with three ducks and a flautist seated in a sampan beneath a willow tree, all below cloud scrolls and against a diaper ground, the sides carved with luxuriant flowering peonies; the interior of the box and of the cover lacquered in dark brown; with original Japanese wood box and cover.
Length of Box 16 3/4 x Width 13 1/4 x Height 6 1/4 in., 42.5 x 33.6 x 15.9 cm. Length of Storage Box 18 3/4 x Width 15 1/4 x Height 7 3/4 in., 47.6 x 38.7 x 19.7 cm.
