Lot Description
[Religion] Troughton, William. A Seasonable Discourse of the Right Use and Abuse of Reason in Matters of Religion
London: Printed for The Passenger at the Three Bibles on London Bridge, 1676. Presentation copy, inscribed by Troughton to Mary Somerset, Duchess of Worcester. 8vo (171 x 112 mm). Contemporary full Restoration-style morocco gilt with spine in 6 compartments and 5 raised bands, all edges gilt; rubbing, sunning to spine, ink stain to page edges affecting margins pp. 207-233; spotting throughout, inked editorial corrections on pp.73, 80, 105, 108, 114, 197; later gift inscription of Mary Anne Palmer.
William Troughton was a Protestant minister sometimes referred to as a "Non-Conformist Divine" for his refusal to conform to the established doctrines of the established church. He played an active role as the Vicar of St. Martin's in suppressing the Penruddock Uprising of 1655, which saw an insurrection led by Royalist John Penruddock attempt to seize control of Salisbury with the aim of inspiring others to take up arms against Oliver Cromwell. It is believed that Troughton was ejected following the Restoration, at which time he moved to Bristol. The present copy is dedicated and inscribed by Troughton to Mary Somerset (1630-1715), then-Marchioness of Worcester.
