Lot Description
[Science, Medicine & Mathmatics] Berthollet, Claude Louis. Researches into the Laws of Chemical Affinity, by C. L. Berthollet, translated from the French by M. Farrell
London: for John Murray; Edinburgh: Bell and Bradfute; Dublin: Gilbert and Hodges, 1804. First English edition. 8vo. 3pp. publisher's ads at end. Modern half morocco, uncut; a few tissue repairs to lower margins of preliminaries including title-page, light spotting; ownership signature of James Mitchell (1786-1844), scientific author and geologist dated 1813.
Berthollet was a prominent French chemist who, along with Antoine Lavoiser, helped devise a chemical nomenclature that served as the basis of the modern system of naming chemical compounds. His work, Researches into the Laws of Chemical Affinity, was an attempt to improve upon the determinations of chemical affinities by recognizing the influence of factors such as volatility, solubility, and chemical mass.
