[PHOTO.] Album feat. images of Hudson Fulton Celebration, plains, auto races, and Black subjects.
11 x 15 in. album inscribed on front cover, "1909-1910 / Hudson Fulton / Waramaug / Southern Trip." Contains more than 350 silver gelatin photographs, approx. 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 in., or smaller, mounted recto/verso on album pages. Some are cut in unique shapes, and most are accompanied by manuscript captions identifying the location or event. The album appears to document a family's experiences and travels in the Northeastern and Southeastern United States, with many of their journeys made by automobile.
Highlighted scenes and subjects include: Multiple views of the Hudson Fulton Celebration, 25 September - 9 October 1909, including buildings decorated for the event, the Fleet and naval parade, electrical displays at night, including illumination of the Fleet and structures, such as the Brooklyn Bridge and the Plaza Hotel, parade floats, and more. -- Multiple views of Lake Waramaug in New Preston, Connecticut, including family photos, the Loomarwick Inn and other establishments in the area, and scenic views. -- Multiple images of the 24-hour race at Brighton Beach, New York, August 1909, May 1910, Labor Day 1910. -- Multiple images of people in automobiles, including the "Welch" and the "American." -- Multiple images of Atlantic City, NJ. -- Views of various ships, including an image of a yacht identified as "J.P. Morgan's 'Corsair.'" -- Views of the blizzard in New York City at Christmas, 1909. -- Series of photos of "Field Day at the Castle," in Tarrytown, NY, May 1910, including images of women conducting a "military drill," participating in a "basketball match," and taking part in a carnival and parade. A snapshot of author and poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox is included in this section. -- Snapshot of train arriving, identified as "Roosevelt's return, June 18, '10," at Mineola, Long Island. -- Multiple images of aviators flying at Hempstead Plains, New York, including "Joe Seymour 'up in the air,'" "Captain Baldwin ready to fly." -- A scene of Philadelphia captioned, "Watching the returns of the Jeffries - Johnson fight, July 4, 1910." -- Multiple images of Bay Shore, Long Island. -- Multiple images documenting a journey by rail from Norfolk, VA, to locations throughout North Carolina and Tennessee, with a long visit documented presumably family farm and residence, in McMinnville, Tennessee. Included in the McMinnville photos are multiple images of African Americans. Views include photos of Black children identified as "'Aunt' Emmy Ramsay's kids," at least 4 views of a young African American child identified as "Booker T. Washington Duncan" involved in various activities such as horseback riding and feeding the pigs. -- 3 images of the Nashville Penitentiary, including two views of Black men in striped prison uniforms, one identified as "Dummy," the other showing a group of men marching to supper. -- Multiple views of Asheville, North Carolina, including the Biltmore Estate and scenic locales. -- Multiple images of the Aviation Meet at Belmont Park, October 1910, including views of the crowds and aviators in flight, such as J. Armstrong Drexel, Ralph Johnston in a "Wright machine," Graham White returning from the Statue of Liberty Flight, and Latham and the "Antoinette." -- Multiple images of African American staff. -- And much more.
