Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 3 late 19th-early 20th century albums documenting travels abroad, incl. India.

11 x 14 1/2 in. album containing approx. 325 photographs mounted recto/verso on album pages, the majority measuring approx. 2 x 3 in., with a small sampling measuring approx. 7 x 9 in. Many photographs are accompanied by manuscript captions written below the images. The photographs document a 1906 journey to India by way of the H.M.T. Ionian, with stops at Port Said, Bombay, Agra, including multiple views of the Taj Mahal, Delhi, Lahore Cantonment, Murree, Kashmir, Srinagar, Hoshiarpore, Sooroo, Kargil, and Ferozepur, among other locations. Both formal photos and informal snapshots are enclosed documenting the landscapes, cityscapes, natives of India, wildlife, festivals, horse races, forts, temples, camp scenes, and men in uniform, including a view of the 29th Punjabis. (Some surface wear to album covers. Photographs overall very good, with occasional toning, spotting, fading to prints).

[With:] 9 x 11 in. album/sketch book with calling card mounted on inside cover identified to "Mr. John Willis, The Philippines, Brasted Chart, Kent." Contains a combination of 17 watercolor sketches of European landscapes and seascapes (most of which appear to be original and not printed) and 23 silver gelatin photographs that appear to document a young man's trip to France as well as a track event. The sketches are accompanied by manuscript titles, some signed by John Willis, the owner of the album. A group of 13 unmounted photographs, approx. 5 3/4 x 7 3/4 in., most capturing architectural ruins, are also included with the album. (Some wear to album covers, especially near spine. Sketches and photos very good overall).

[Also with:] 7 3/8 x 10 1/2 in. album containing 48 photographs mounted recto/verso on album pages, measuring approx. 5 x 7 in. or smaller, lacking identification. The album features a combination of photos of a family, their home, landscapes, large residences, occupational scenes, and leisurely activities such as canoeing and picnicking. Two unmounted photos, approx. 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. or smaller, are also enclosed, the first showing a hunter who appears to have just caught a bear, the second showing a group of young women dressed in white, possibly students. Based on the album's contents, it may represent a family living abroad. (Surface wear to album, especially spine. Some toning, soiling to photographs.)

Together, 3 albums compiled ca late 19th-early 20th century.

Property of Kris and Alicia Huffman, SuddElle Farms at Clover Hill, Lenoir, North Carolina
