Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. An assortment of cased images, many collected as associated family groups.


5 groups of images organized into bags or riker mounts by consignor according to possible family ties between subjects. Some subjects with tentative identifications and some without.

Highlights include: A group of 5 daguerreotypes organized into one bag by consignor, with no family name or affiliation labeled. 2 of the images are quarter plate examples, showing the same couple with and without their infant child. The man in the image wears glasses. The other 3 images are sixth plate portraits, including one portrait of a couple bearing possible familial resemblance to the couple in the previously mentioned images, one portrait of the woman from the original couple, and one of an older bearded man. It is unclear exactly how or if all of the subjects are related. Conditions and housings vary, though images are in generally fair condition. -- A gropu of 3 daguerreotypes and a First National Bank of Greenfield, MA check dated 1869 and payable to D. W. Aword. One of the daguerreotypes is a sixth plate portrait of a woman posed with her hand against her cheek and her elbow resting on the table next to her. One is a quarter plate example of an older woman wearing a fascinating shawl and solid gloves, identified as "Aunt Mary" and dated June 1859 in pencil behind image. Conditions and housings vary. -- A group of 10 cased and 2 paper images housed together, many with inscribed identifications and paper labels accompanying them, some identified as members of the Strong and Wheelock families. Included are 3 half plate examples, 3 quarter plate examples, one sixth plate example, and 3 ninth plate examples. Conditions and housings vary. -- And 2 other groupings of images. -- Together, 5 groups of images collected together, having possible familial or other ties relating them to one another.
