Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Assorted portraiture incl. daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and others.
Half plate ambrotype portrait of a woman identified on accompanying paper label as Mrs. Andrew Colton Dam, whose husband owned Union Square Hotel in New York City and whose son Andrew Jr. served in the California Supreme Court. (Clear image, minor toning.) Housed in a fully separated double-sided case, rendering the ambrotype viewable from both front and back (split twice along spine, other separations and extreme surface wear). Brass mat stamped for BRADY. -- Quarter plate ambrotype of a man with a mustache. (Spotting to image and mat.) Housed in a double-sided case, rendering the ambrotype viewable from both front and back (heavy surface wear, some separations). -- Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of an older bearded man having a large volume open on his lap and holding a large format paper portrait on top of the pages. (Chemical deterioration to edges, some scuffs and spots throughout; unsealed.) Housed in a fully separated leatherette case (split, surface wear). -- 9 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. uncut ambrotype plate featuring 4 identical images (several scratches and losses to emulsion, wear to edges). -- And 21 others, including 2 milk glass portraits, a tintype plate featuring 4 identical images, and a paper image housed under amber glass. Housings and conditions vary. Together, 24 images.
[With:] Ninth plate octagonal Union case with geometric/scroll design (significant soiling, loose hinges, velvet pad not present).
