[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 9 ambrotypes and tintypes of people wearing hats, incl. soldiers and civilians.

Lot comprised of 9 ambrotypes and tintypes of men, women, and children wearing various types of hats. Plate sizes include sixth plate (6), ninth plate (2), and sixteenth plate oreo (1).

Highlights include: Ninth plate ruby ambrotype portrait of a military bandsman in uniform, posed with his brass horn (tarnish to edges, spotting to plate). Housed in pressed paper case (some surface wear). -- Sixth plate, outdoor ambrotype of a group of approx. nine men posed together around a wagon that is covered with various goods (plate worn, with spotting, loss to emulsion). Housed in Union case, Voyage of Life, Old Age [Berg 1-80] (previously repaired cracks throughout, chipping and loss to edges and corners). -- Sixth plate ruby ambrotype of two young men, each wearing a different type of hat (light wear to emulsion, some discoloration to plate). Housed in pressed paper case with penciled notation behind image, which reads, "Taken at Stearne's Photograph Saloon. Vergennes, Vermont, " with the subjects identified as "Carta (?) Dean / Harrison Warner," with date "April 8th, 1862." (Fully separated at hinge, some surface wear). -- Sixth plate ruby ambrotype of two men, one wearing a tall hat with no brim, the other in a brimmed hat (spotting to plate, some wear to emulsion). Housed under mat, preserver, and cover glass, uncased. -- Sixth plate tintype of two men who appear to be civilians in work attire, each wearing a short-billed hat (image a bit dark). Housed in half case (surface wear). -- And 4 others. -- Together, 9 ambrotypes and tintypes of people wearing an assortment of hats. Conditions vary.
