Lot Description
[MAP]. CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718). Globe gore [Great Lakes, Florida, Gulf Coast, Texas, Mississippi River, Chesapeake, etc]. Venice, ca 1688.
Engraved globe gore of eastern North America and the Great Lakes, 495 x 368 mm. Native American scenes, an alligator, sea monsters, dwellings, hunting scenes, and nature scenes. (Small tear lower corner margin, contemporary ink partial notation in upper margin.)
"The most interesting feature of the [Coronelli] gores is the recording of the recent French explorations in North America. The Mississippi is marked, following La Salle's journeys to its mouth in 1681-1687, and the bordering territory is boldly marked La Louisiana. Ambitious French aspirations can be read in the title Canada - Nuova Francia across nearly all of the lands east of the Mississippi, apart from a central coastal strip and the territories of Carolina and Florida in the south. Along the conjectural course of the River Ohio is the suggestion that this has its source in Lake Frontenac, i.e. Lake Erie" (Shirley 537).
