2 volumes, 4to (241 x 184 mm). Engraved frontispiece in vol.1, 2 engraved vignettes on title-pages, 25 engraved plates (1 folding, 2 not called for in the list of plates); errata leaf at end of vol.2. (Light marginal toning.) Modern tree calf antique, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, classic English red and green morocco lettering devices gilt in 2, others heavily gilt. Provenance: light notations at lower margins on the first few pages.

FIRST EDITION, without the supplemental third volume issued in 1787. "The work, which must be regarded as the most prominent of Pennant's works, was originally planned as a sketch of the zoology of North America, but was later enlarged with the addition of descriptions of the quadrupeds and birds of the parts of Europe and Asia lying north of latitude 60 degrees N" (Anker 397). Arctic Bibliography 13291; Lada-Mocarski 38; Sabin 59757; Wickersham 6822-23.
