4to. 4 photogravure plates, 112 mounted photographic reproductions, folding map. Original gilt-lettered cream cloth, upper cover with a central gilt medallion, gilt-lettered spine (spine toned, some soiling to lower cover, small split to rear joint near head, light rubbing to gilt). Provenance: additional gift inscription on limitation.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED DELUXE ISSUE, number 48 of 500 copies, SIGNED BY PEARY AND R.A. BARTLETT. Peary's account of his achievement of the pole, being the first man to reach it, was introduced with high praise by Theodore Roosevelt. Bartlett was captain of the SS Roosevelt, accompanying Peary on his attempts to reach furthest north. Arctic Bib. 13230.
