Lot Description
WILLIAMS, Samuel Wells (1812-1884). Ying Hwa Yun-fu Lih-kiai. An English and Chinese Vocabulary in the Court Dialect. Macao: Printed at the Office of the Chinese Repository, 1844.
8vo. Additional wood-engraved title-page. Original drab printed boards (rebacked, preserving original blue paper spine and partial label, extremities rubbed). [With:] contemporary alphabet tables laid in.
FIRST EDITION. Williams was a well-known missionary who had arrived in China in 1833, subsequently serving as a diplomat, during which time he accompanied Matthew C. Perry to Japan. This work, which according to Williams was printed by Chinese and Portuguese workers who knew no English, was intended to supersede John Robert Morrison's Dictionary of 1822. Cordier 1598-1599; Lust 1058.
