Lot Description

WONG, K. Chimin and Wu LIEN-TEH. History of Chinese Medicine. Being a Chronicle of Medical Happenings in China from Ancient Times to the Present Period. Tientsin, China: The Tientsin Press, 1932.

Thick 8vo. Numerous plates from photographs, diagrams, etc., folding color lithograph map in rear pocket. Original gilt-stamped and lettered light blue cloth (spine very lightly sunned, hinges tender). Provenance: neat ownership signature on half-title.

FIRST EDITION. "The writers spent 15 years in the compilation of this work, the first important contribution to the history of Chinese medicine. Beginning with demonology, plant lore and folk medicine, the writers deal with the subject from the earliest times to the present. They tell of the high standards attained by the Chinese in the 8th century B.C., of the effect of Confucianism upon the development of surgery, of the 'doctrine of the pulse,' of Chinese pharmacy and acupuncture and of the establishment of Western Medicine in present-day China" (Garrison-Morton 6493).
