Lot Description
CHURCHILL, Winston Leonard Spencer, Sir (1874-1965). The Second World War. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1948-1953.
4 volumes (of 6) only, 8vo, comprising: The Gathering Storm, Their Finest Hour, The Hinge of Fate, Triumph and Tragedy. Original red cloth (rubbing, sunning to spines, Their Finest Hour spine head exhibiting losses, fraying with repair work to front hinge, The Hinge of Fate exhibits a later dust jacket). Provenance: Larry J. Swanson (ownership signature, Their Finest Hour).
ALL FOUR VOLUMES INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL. Publication of Churchill’s monumental history of the Second World War was delayed in Britain due to last-minute changes Churchill wished to make to the British edition, as he considered that to be the definitive history.
[With]: CHURCHILL, Winston Spencer (1940-2012). Typed letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill") to Tom Callos dated 25 January 1993. In full: "I do hope that your book has now arrived safely. When my secretary returned to the Post Office she was advised that they have over quoted on the cost and only charged £6.00. In the circumstances I am returning your cheque for $25.00! With very best wishes."
