Lot Description
CHURCHILL, Winston Leonard Spencer, Sir (1874-1965). My African Journey. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908.
8vo. Half-title; portrait frontispiece, 3 maps, and numerous illustrations from photographs by Churchill and Lt. Col. Gordon Wilson; 16pp. publisher's catalogue at end. (Occasional marginal spotting.) Modern red morocco; original pictorial cloth bound in at end.
FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL on the front flyleaf, dated 1946—just a year after Japan and Germany surrendered to the Allies, marking the end of World War II. That same year, Churchill delivered his famous 'Iron Curtain' speech, which ushered in the Cold War and shaped the geopolitical landscape for the next 50 years.
My African Journey recounts Churchill's 1907 tour through Britain's East African possessions as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies—his first official government office. Woods A12.
