Lot Description

Five Civil War Era Canteens, Four US with Maker's Marks
American Civil War

1) Pattern 1862 Philadelphia Depot "Bullseye" Canteen. Spout maker marked HADDEN, PORTER & BOOTH . PHILA. Nominally 8" in diameter with a tinned sheet iron oblate spheroid body stamped with seven concentric rings for rigidity and support. Canteen with field replaced cover of dark brownish wool. Includes a period herringbone twill sling and period stopper. About Very Good with wear.
2) Pattern 1858 New York Depot Smooth Side Canteen. Spout maker marked JEWEL. Nominally 8" in diameter with a smooth tinned sheet iron oblate spheroid body and applied pewter spout. No cover is present. One sling keeper is punched for a jack chain. Includes an old twill pattern striped woven sling with a sheet brass buckle. About Fair, with moderate wear, dings and dents and some surface rust.
3) Pattern 1862 Philadelphia Depot "Bullseye" Canteen. Spout maker marked J. HALL ROHRMAN PHILAD. Nominally 8" in diameter with a tinned sheet iron oblate spheroid body stamped with seven concentric rings for rigidity and support. Includes what appears to be a period stopper with a modern jack chain a modern sling. About Good overall with traces of tin plating, moderate wear and denting and some freckles of surface rust.
4) Pattern 1862 Philadelphia Depot "Bullseye" Canteen. Spout maker marked *HB&Co PHILAD*. Nominally 8" in diameter with a tinned sheet iron oblate spheroid body stamped with eight concentric rings for rigidity and support. Includes a reproduction stopper, jack chain and sling. About Fair to Good overall with moderate wear and denting and some surface rust.
5) Copper Civilian Canteen. Nominally 6" in diameter a small .58" diameter applied copper spout and two sling guides for a cord. Outer face is slightly convex, inner face is slightly concave. Two-piece body construction with the inner face soldered on to the rest of the canteen. Fair to Good condition with numerous dents and dings, some soldered repairs and a seam opening in the bottom that appears to have been period repaired at least once. Copper with a rich, uncleaned patina.
