Lot Description
Bannerman Civil War Surplus Blakeslee 10 Tube Spencer Rifle and Carbine Cartridge Box
American Civil War
Nominally 12.5" in overall length and 3.75" wide at the widest point with a hexagonal cross section, containing a wood block with ten tin cartridge tubes. Face of box with WH Wilkinson makers mark and patent information. Includes sling. Wilkinson's contract was only for 10,000 of the 32,000 10-Tube Blakeslee Patent "quick loader" boxes ordered by the Ordnance Department, with the balance of 22,000 delivered by Emerson Gaylord. This is one of the surplus boxes sold off to Bannerman with the lid cut off and a reattached lid with a metal hinge that was installed by Bannerman to sell the item.
