Lot Description
Two Pre-Civil War Production US Model 1860 Light Cavalry Sabers by Ames
American Civil War
1) 34.75" curved singled edged blade with 27" stopped median fuller. Blade 1.1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 40.75". 6" hilt with cast brass two branch guard and knuckle bow and Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Grooved wooden grip covered in leather with 12 wraps of twisted wire. Reverse ricasso stamped AMES MFG CO/CHICOPEE/MASS, obverse ricasso dated 1860. No inspection marks are present, suggesting this may be one of the 1,000 cavalry sabers acquired by the State of Virginia from Ames in 1860. Includes a correct pattern steel scabbard that is also void of inspection marks.
