1845 Dated Ames Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber
Mexican American War
36" curved, single edged blade with a 26" stopped median fuller and an 18" narrow fuller along the spine. Blade 1.25" wide at ricasso with a flat spine and the overall length of the saber is 41.5". 5.75" cast brass hilt with two-branch guard and knuckle bow and a Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Leather covered wood grip with 18 wraps of twisted wire. Reverse ricasso stamps NP AMES/CABOTVILLE/1845 with the obverse ricasso marked US over JCB, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector Joseph C Bragg. Pommel cap with clear NWP and WAT inspection marks, those of Nahum W Patch and Ordnance Officer William Anderson Thornton. White buff leather washer remains in place on the face of the guard. Includes the saber's iron scabbard with correct lap seam, screw attached throat and two suspension ring. No inspection marks are present on the drag of the scabbard.
