Lot Description
US Model 1860 Naval Cutlass by Ames with Scabbard
American Civil War
26" slightly curved single-edged blade with 19" unstopped median fuller. Blade 1.2" wide at ricasso. Overall length 32.25" with a 5.75" hilt. Riveted sheet brass basket guard, Phrygian helmet pommel cap, grooved wood grip with leather covering and 20 wraps of twisted wire. Obverse ricasso marked U.S.N./D.R and dated 1862. Reverse ricasso with legible Ames "Scroll" mark. Upper face inside guard is stamped with the rack number 18M/215. Includes correct riveted leather scabbard with brass frog button. A very nice example of a Civil War US Naval Cutlass with a nice scabbard, both in a much better state of preservation than such pieces are normally encountered.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
