Lot Description
Civil War Era Boston Navy Yard Marked Enlisted Navy Belt & Accoutrement Rig
American Civil War
US Naval Pattern 1841 Blackened Buff Leather Belt nominally 39.5" in length, including the brass hook and 2" in width. Belt with standing loop at one end and brass hook at the other, not designed for a belt plate. Reverse of belt is stenciled U.S.N.Y./BOSTON 1861. The reverse is also marked with what appears to be an old museum inventory number. The belt is a standard Civil War era enlisted seaman's belt and has the primary accoutrements required for a seaman to fight on board or as part of a landing party attached to it. These include the following items:
1) A Pattern 1860 Belt Frog for the M1860 Naval Cutlass or the Dahlgren Bowie Bayonet that is stenciled USNY/BOSTON/1864 on the reverse.
2) A USNY/BOSTON marked revolver frog for the Whitney Navy percussion revolver with closure strap and brass finial.
3) A US Navy pistol cartridge box with cap pouch on the inner face and the original six section tin magazine on the interior. The exterior flap is embossed with a USN in an oval and the inner flap is marked USNY/BOSTON.
4) A US Navy Friction Primer Pouch that is missing the tin magazine from the interior and is stamped on the inner face USNY/BOSTON.
This is an incredibly rare set of US Naval accoutrements from the American Civil War that no doubt took several years to assemble, especially as all of the pieces of the set are Boston Navy Yard marked.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
