Lot Description
US Model 1841 Naval Cutlass & Scabbard
Mexican American War
20.75" semi-wasp waisted double edged blade with prominent median ridge. Blade 1.7" wide at ricasso. Overall length 26.25". Cast brass hilt with fish scale grip and cast semi-basket garb with forward swept disc quillon at top. Left of quillion with RC inspection mark. Face of guard rack marked 5/SD, inside of guard rack marked 34. Pommel cap cast with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} grasping arrows in its talons. Reverse ricasso with weak and mostly illegible markings that read US/1846. Obverse ricasso with clearer N.P. AMES/CABBOTVILLE marking. Cutlass is accompanied by its correct period riveted leather scabbard with permanently attached belt loop.
