Lot Description
US Model 1852 Naval Officers Sword by Clauberg, Inscribed to Denny Hayes USN
American Civil War
29" single edged spear point blade with 19.5" median fuller. Blade 1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 35". 5.25" hilt with cast gilt brass guard with USN in a ribbon it its face. Grooved wood grip covered in shagreen with 14 wraps of twisted wire. Reverse ricasso stamped CLAUBERG/SOLINGEN around their trademark. Blade etched with foliate, nautical, marital and patriotic themes as well as IRON PROOF on the reverse. The sword is accompanied by its shagreen covered scabbard with gilt brass mounts. The obverse of the upper mount is engraved Denny Hayes/USN. A search of Civil War records reveals two potential USN Officers that this sword could have belonged to with the most likely candidate being Denny M Hayes. He was mustered into service as a Mate on June 7, 1864 made Acting Ensign on November 18, 1864 and was honorably discharged on October 21, 1865. He returned to the Navy as an Acting Ensign on July 5, 1866 with the appointment revoked on December 7, 1867. Hayes was born in Ireland in 1843 and emigrated to America circa 1854 at the age of 11. No further information about Hayes' service was readily available.
