Lot Description
Antique Type I US Model 1892 Krag Rifle Arsenal Converted to 1896 Standard
Spanish American War
.30-40 Krag. 30" barrel length. SN: 782. Blued metal arsenal refinish with polished bolt and internals mounting a sanded full length walnut straight wrist stock and half length upper handguard. Bolt action internal magazine fed repeating rifle charged with loose rounds through a hinged magazine in obverse frame. Sights consist of an adjustable ladder rear notch and pinned front blade. Left receiver is marked U.S./1894 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. followed by the serial number. Wrist shows a Circle P mark below E initial. Left wrist exhibits a weak JSA/1897 cartouche of inspector Joseph S. Adams. The original rod forend was cut and filled in at the arsenal with the wood shim secured by two transverse wood pegs. As part of its arsenal conversion, the butt was drilled for the rod and cleaning kit storage compartment, and the muzzle crowned. Upper barrel band replaced with the model 1896 variant. Item retains triple sling loops, and comes with a brass sight and muzzle cover. Trapdoor butt contains an oiler but no cleaning rod. {ANTIQUE}
