Lot Description

Very Fine US Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle
Indian Wars

.45-70. 32.5" barrel. SN: 197388. Mfg. ca. 1882. Blued finish with case colored breech block and straight grip walnut stock secured by two barrel solid round spring retained barrel bands. Single shot "Trapdoor" action rifle with M1879 pattern ladder rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug with pinned blade, sling and stacking swivels and button jag head cleaning rod. Two-piece trigger, three click tumbler, smooth trigger. Breechblock marked US/MODEL/1873. Lockplate struck with {Spread-Winged Eagle} followed by U.S/SPRINGFIELD. Left side of the barrel is marked V/P/{Eaglehead} with an additional P mark. Clear {Circle-P} firing proof in wood behind triggeguard with a crisp script SWP/1882 cartouche on the counterpane, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector Samuel W. Porter. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this rifle, but several very close to it, all less than 10 numbers away, were located. These rifles included #197383, #197385, #197405 and #197407 were all issued to the 5th US Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War. A really fine condition Trapdoor Rifle. {ANTIQUE}
