Lot Description

Smith Artillery Carbine by Massachusetts Arms Co
American Civil War

.50 caliber. 21.5" barrel. SN: 10852. Blued barrel, color casehardened frame, steel furniture, smooth walnut stock and forend. Single shot percussion break open breechloading carbine with ladder rear sight, German silver blade front sight and sling swivels rather than a sling bar and ring. Standard Mass Arms, Poultney & Trimble and Smith patent markings on receiver. Matching serial numbers on receiver and barrel. Two clear script JM cartouches are present on the reverse wrist. One of the most successful of the American Civil War breechloading carbines, some 30,000 Smith Carbines were produced during the war with the guns seeing service with numerous US volunteer cavalry regiments, including the 7th & 11th Illinois, 17th Pennsylvania and 6th & 9th Ohio. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this serial number, but the two closest guns, #10665 and #10891 were both issued to Company I of the 3rd Maryland Volunteer Cavalry. {ANTIQUE}
