Lot Description
Fine Smith Carbine by American Machine Works
American Civil War
.50 caliber. 21.5" barrel. SN: 11440. Blued barrel, color casehardened frame, steel furniture, smooth walnut stock and forend. Single shot percussion break open breechloading carbine with ladder rear sight, German silver blade front sight and sling bar and ring opposite the lock. Standard American Machine Works, Poultney & Trimble and Smith patent markings on receiver. Matching serial numbers on receiver and barrel. Two clear script cartouches are present on the reverse wrist, an LFR and a JH. One of the most successful of the American Civil War breechloading carbines, some 30,000 Smith Carbines were produced during the war with the guns seeing service with numerous US volunteer cavalry regiments, including the 7th & 11th Illinois, 17th Pennsylvania and 6th & 9th Ohio. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this serial number, but the two closest guns, #11337 and #11475 were both issued to Company L of the 1st Alabama Volunteer Cavalry (US). {ANTIQUE}
