Lot Description
Model 1862 (aka 1st Model) Joslyn Carbine in the 19th New York Cavalry Issue Range
American Civil War
.52RF. 22" barrel. SN: 353. Blued barrel, color casehardened receiver and lock, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot breechloading military carbine with 1st pattern, friction latch breech block, M1861 3-leaf rear sight, pinched shark fin front sight and saddle bar and ring opposite lock. Lock marked in three lines, JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON/CONN. Top of breech marked in three lines: JOSLYN'S PATENT/OCTOBER 8TH, 1861/JUNE 24TH, 1862 and with the serial number. Matching serial number on hinge, no other numbers noted. Counterpane with a pair of mostly legible script EF cartouches, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector Edward Flather who inspected the earliest production Joslyn carbines, which were delivered in August of 1863. 2,200 1st Model Joslyns were acquired by the Ordnance Department followed by an additional 8,000 2nd Model carbines. The Joslyns saw use with a number of US volunteer cavalry regiments including the 4th & 8th Indiana, 19th New York 13th Tennessee (US), 9th Pennsylvania and 2nd Wisconsin, among others. A check of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this specific gun, but #352, only 1 number away, was issued to Company F of the 19th New York Cavalry, as was #348. A number of the guns in the 3XX serial number range were issued to either F or H company of that regiment. Other records are fragmentary at best, so it is likely this gun was issued to another company of the 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry. A relatively scarce Civil War carbine, acquired in fairly small numbers when compared to carbines like the Smith, Burnside and Maynard. {ANTIQUE}
