American Civil War

.52 caliber. 20" octagon to round barrel. SN: 3604. Blued and color casehardened finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut buttstock. Single shot percussion tilting breech percussion carbine with short base ladder rear sight graduated to 600 yards, iron blade front sight on large triangular base and sling bar and ring on obverse frame. Matching serial numbers on bottom of barrel, bottom of receiver and bottom of breech block. A legible script WHR boxed cartouche are present at the reverse wrist, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector William H Russel. Later Gwyn & Campbell production flat sided hammer and small loop triggerguard with small claw catch breech release. A total of 8,202 Gwyn & Campbell carbines were acquired on contract by the US Ordnance Department circa 1863-1864. Of those roughly 4,000 were of the "Type II" configuration. The Type II carbines underwent a number of minor changes regarding the lever latch and catch system and the buttplate profile during their production. While this carbine was not listed in the Springfield Research Service serial number books, the two closest guns (#3523 and #3660) were both issued to Company B of the 14th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry. {ANTIQUE}
