Lot Description

Gwyn & Campbell Grapevine Carbine
American Civil War

.52 caliber. 20" octagon to round barrel. SN: 2907. Blued and color casehardened finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut buttstock. Single shot percussion tilting breech percussion carbine with long base ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards, iron blade front sight on large triangular base and sling bare and ring on reverse of frame. Lock marked GWYN & CAMPBELL in an arc over PATENT over 1862 over HAMILTON, O, with some of the markings quite weak. Obverse receiver marked UNION/RIFLE in two vertical line near the barrel. Matching serial numbers on bottom of barrel, bottom of receiver and lever. Matching mating mark 43 on bottom of barrel and receiver. No cartouches are present. Early production rounded serpentine hammer, early large loop triggerguard with rear trigger breech release. A total of 8,202 Gwyn & Campbell carbines were acquired on contract by the US Ordnance Department circa 1863-1864. Of those roughly 4,200 were of the "Type I" configuration, although some minor changes were made during the production of the guns, like the adoption of a shorter base ladder rear sight that would become standard on the Type II carbines. A search of the Springfield Research Serial Number books did not find this gun but the closest recorded gun to it is #2900 which was in the possession of Company B of the 14th Kansas Cavalry on July 30 of 1864. {ANTIQUE}
