Lot Description

Remington Beals Army Revolver
American Civil War

.44 caliber. 8" octagonal barrel. SN: 166. Blued finish, color casehardened hammer and loading lever, brass triggerguard, German silver grip screw escutcheons and smooth two-piece walnut grips. Single action percussion revolver with un-fluted six-chambered cylinder, top strap groove rear sight and dovetailed German silver cone front sight. Top of barrel marked in two lines BEALS' PATENT SEPT. 14, 1858/MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS' ILION, NY. with the second line somewhat weak due to a poor die strike or worn die. Matching serial numbers on right of frame under grip and under barrel, loading lever and cylinder are not numbered, as is typical of these guns. Grips unnumbered but fit perfectly. Only about 1,900 of the first of the solid frame Remington Army revolvers were produced circa 1861-1862 with 50%-80% being acquired by the US Government for Civil War military service. This gun is not martially marked but may have been acquired on the open market as some were, and those guns did not receive inspection marks. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this gun, but the two closest ones were #153 which was issued to Company I of the 5th Illinois Cavalry and #175 which was issued to Company E of the 19th New York Cavalry. A nice example of a scarce, early Remington Army revolver. {ANTIQUE}
