Lot Description

Navy Contract Whitney Navy Revolver
American Civil War

.36 caliber. 7.625" octagonal barrel. SN: 22474. Blued finish, color casehardened hammer and loading lever, brass triggerguard, smooth, 2-piece walnut grips. Single action percussion revolver with un-fluted six-chambered cylinder, grooved top strap rear sight and brass post front sight. Barrel marked in two-lines: E. WHTINEY/N.HAVEN. Lower left of frame with block F.C.W inspection stamp with a matching script FCW cartouche on the left grip, the marks of arsenal sub-inspector Frank C Warner who inspected most of the US Navy contract arms made by Whitney during the American Civil War. The matching serial number 22474 appears under the barrel, on the loading lever, on the cylinder arbor pin, on the rear face of the cylinder and on the interior of the grips. No number was located on (or in) the frame, which seems to be typical of these guns. The revolver falls at the begining of the range of February 1864 Washington Navy Yard delivered Whitney Navy Revolvers, many of which saw use with the Atlantic Blockading Squadron. {ANTIQUE}
