Lot Description
Martially Marked Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Factory Letter
American Civil War
.44 caliber. 8" barrel. SN: 16203 (mfg. ca. 1861). Blued and color casehardened finish, brass triggerguard, smooth one-piece walnut grips. Single action percussion revolver with four screw frame cut for stock, unfluted, rebated six-chambered round cylinder, hammer notch rear sight and German silver blade front sight. Standard one-line New York barrel address, all visible numbers match, cylinder with typical naval engagement scene that is mostly visible. Sub-inspection marks throughout, a single weak script cartouche is visible on the left side of the grip. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter stating that it was shipped with a total of 300 Colt Army Revolvers to the Washington Arsenal on November 14, 1861. A search of the Springfield Research Service Serial Number Books did not locate this number, with the closest one noted being #16370 which was issued to the 2nd West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry. {ANTIQUE}
