Lot Description
US Model 1817 Common Rifle by Johnson Altered to Percussion
American Civil War
.54 caliber. 36" round barrel secured by three flat spring-retained bands. NSN. Browned and color casehardened finish, iron furniture, walnut stock with oval patchbox. Single shot, muzzleloading percussion altered rifle with fixed notch rear sight, Barleycorn front sight, sling swivels and a brass tipped trumpet head ramrod. Lock marked in three lines forward of the hammer R JOHSNON/U S/MIDDN CONN in an arc around a {Spread-Winged Eagle} and dated 1823 vertically at tail. Breech plug tang dated 1824. Breech with US/JM/P proofs and inspection marks. Weak cartouche on counterpane appears to be the script JM of Justin Murphy. A very nice condition example of a cone-in-barrel altered Common Rifle that could well have seen use during the early part of the American Civil War and that still retains some nice browned finish. {ANTIQUE}
