Lot Description

US Model 1828 (M1816 Type III) M.T. Wickham Contract Musket with Bayonet
Mexican American War

.69 caliber. 42" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock smoothbore musket with three flat, spring retained barrel bands, brass blade front sight, no rear sight, upper sling swivel, a broken lower sling swivel and a button head iron ramrod. Lock marked MT WICKHAM in an arc forward of the cock and PHILA/1833 in two vertical lines at the tail. Lock remains in original flint. Touchhole with moderate erosion. Breech marked US/AH/P and breech plug tang is dated 1833. The weak outlines of two cartouches are present, one on the counterpane and one on the stock comb, forward of the buttplate tang. The initials A | S are carved into the reverse of the stock. The musket is accompanied by a US M1816/22/27 socket bayonet with a 16" blade that is marked US/SR on the face of the blade and with the mating mark 7 forward of the mortise cut.
