Lot Description
WWI 93rd Infantry Division (Colored) 1917 Tunic
World War I
22" sleeves. 25.5" long. 15" chest width. Wool US Model 1917 pattern tunic with the shoulder mounting the Adrian helmet patch of the 93rd Infantry Division (Colored) of World War I, with collar additionally mounting a 370th Infantry Regiment C company mark.
The 370th Regiment, known as "The Black Devils", was one of the two infantry brigades formed under the auspices of the 93rd Infantry Division in WWI. Composed of African American enlisted men with white officers, the 93rd was originally slated to be split up into labor units during the war. The timely intervention of African American political luminaries prevented their relegation to such duties, but the regular Army still refused to accept black soldiers to fight. As a result, the 93rd was broken up and placed under French command, where they distinguished themselves and received French honors through the war. Though they wore American uniforms, their equipment, including their helmets, were supplied by the French. The "Blue Helmet" patch honors this heritage.
