Lot Description
New York Depot US Model 1858 Smooth Side Canteen Maker Marked by J.C. Johnson
American Civil War
US Model 1858 "Smooth Side" Canteen with the pewter spout maker marked J.C. JOHNSON & Co/FEB 5. 65. Nominally 8" in diameter with a tinned sheet iron smooth oblate spheroid body. Retains what appears to be the original mousy grayish-brown jean cloth covering, typical of late war New York Depot canteens, with some old period of use repairs. Also retains a well worn folded and sewn cotton drill sling that appears to be original to the canteen with worn traces of an inspector's mark stamped on it. Includes what is probably the original period New York Depot stopper with jack chain secured to a small hole punched in one of the upper sling loops. The New York Depot received 100,000 of these "smooth side" canteens from New York hardware merchant John C. Johnson, from a February 4, 1865 contract at the rate of .66 cents each. They were all delivered very late into the war and most were likely unissued prior to the cessation of hostilities.
