Lot Description

Full Stock Flintlock Rifle by H.D. Ziegler

.36 Cal. 40.5" barrel length. SN: NSN. Browned finish with brass fittings, crescent butt, double set triggers, and mounting a full length maple stock with applied tiger stripe pattern. Single shot flintlock muzzle loading rifle mounting fixed semi-buckhorn rear and German Silver front blade sights. Barrel is signed H.D. ZIEGLER followed by P.O., for his Portsmouth, Ohio business. Lockplate has no extant maker marks but retains light border scrollwork and is engraved with a vignette of a hunter among the trees behind the cock. Right butt trapdoor is German Silver with floral engraved embellishments. Missing rear screw to brass counterplane. Most likely restocked. The touch hole aligns with the forward edge of the pan.

Henry D. Ziegler's gunmaking career began possibly as early as 1853, or as late as 1856, and continued through 1896. Working out of his shop in Portsmouth, Ohio, Ziegler's company was listed as "Ziegler & Co." in 1866.
