Lot Description
Type 98 Shin Gunto
World War II
26.25" nagasa (blade length). 40" overall with tsuka (hilt) and saya (scabbard). Shinogi-zukuri blade with O-kissaki, Ihore mune, and a sugu (flat) hamon line. Blade further features 24.24" fullers running along the back of the blade, possibly indicating it was shortened at some point. The nakago is unsigned with four mekugi-pin ports, two of which have been filled in, indicating the blade was an older one resized for the Shin-Gunto mounts. Mounts include a spring catch to the tsuba that locks into the wood core metal saya (scabbard). Tsuba is of the pierced pattern with four sakura (cherry blossoms) on each face. Standard brown grip tape over white rayskin wrap with two sakura pattern menuki.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
