Lot Description
Type 98 Shin Gunto with Mei
World War II
27.75" nagasa (blade length). 40.25" overall with tsuka (hilt) and saya (scabbard). Shinogi zukuri style blade with O-kissaki and Ihori mune set in Type 98 Shin Gunto mounts with painted metal wood core saya. Blade displays midare (irregular) hamon line and masame hada (straight grain). Mounts include a spring catch to the tsuba that locks into the scabbard with the standard brown grip tape over white rayskin. Tsuba decorated with four sakura (cherry blossoms) to the corners over a nanako ground, and similar sakura patterns to all further mountings except habaki. Menuki installed on the tsuka likewise feature cherry blossoms. Imperial Japanese Army brown and blue sword knot is attached to the loop. Both sides of the haagari nakago are signed, but this part appears to have been professionally cleaned at some point with all kanji having some minor residues and no visible rust. Blade shows polishing marks at the tip and intermittently over blade. Mekugi pin fails to fully seat and must be reshaped.
