Lot Description
Type 98 Shin Gunto
World War II
24.75" nagasa (blade length). 39.75" overall with tsuka (hilt) and saya (scabbard). Shinogi-Zukuri style blade with Chu (medium) kissaki and Choji (clover tree) pattern hamon set in standard Type 98 Shin-Gunto mounts. Tip shows a prominent Omaru boshi, the blade overall has an Ihori Mune, and the Masame Hada. Mounts consist of the standard brass tsuba (guard) with four Sakura to each corner over a nanako ground. Hilt shows standard wartime brown grip tape over white rayskin and containing two sakura menuki. Scabbard has a wood core and leather liner, and a brass stud on the outer face that formerly connected to a leather snap behind the tsuba, this flap has torn off. The kiri nakago (flat tip tang) is unsigned and has two mekugi pin ports, suggesting it may be an older hand-made blade transferred into modern mountings.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
