Lot Description
Remington New Model Army .44 CF Cartridge Conversion Revolver
.44CF. 8" octagonal barrel. SN: 33295. Blued finish, color casehardened hammer, brass triggerguard, two-piece smooth walnut grips. Single action US military contract percussion revolver altered to cartridge with an un-fluted six-chambered cylinder, no ejector rod, a grooved topstrap rear sight and a dovetailed German silver pinched blade front sight, likely modified from the original German silver cone sight. Standard Remington two-line, 1858 date barrel markings without the "NEW MODEL" third line. US military sub-inspections throughout on the metal, with a weak, illegible cartouche on the left grip. A classic example of a Civil War used US military percussion revolver altered to cartridge after the Civil War. The work is not quite the quality of Remington factory work and R. Bruce McDowell suggests these conversions were performed by a major retailer (Hartley & Graham perhaps?) in his book A Study of Colt Conversion and Other Percussion Revolvers. An identical specimen to this example is pictured and discussed on pages 64-65 of that book. {ANTIQUE}
