Lot Description
Fine Relief Carved Silver Mounted Spanish Percussion Miquelet Pistol Dated 1832
.62 caliber. 7.125" two-stage pinned octagon to round slightly swamped barrel. NSN. Blued finish, silver mountings, fine relief carved European hardwood stock. Single shot smooth bore muzzleloading miquelet lock percussion pistol without sights. Lock marked with a raised VD makers mark in a depressed circle and dated 1832 above the mainspring. The pistol is profusely decorated with classical motifs including raised chiseled decorations at the breech that likely represent the Roman god Jupiter, a dolphin or sea serpent themed hammer nose with decorated hammer neck and spur, a raised bust of Caesar or another Roman emperor on the bottom of the silver butt cap and a similar decoration engraved on the bow of the silver triggerguard. The stock features raised carvings with foliate and classical themes on the forend, foliate scrolls down the backstrap and carved fish scale style checkering. Three silver pipes secure a button head steel ramrod. A really exquisite Spanish overcoat sized pistol from the early part of the percussion period. {ANTIQUE}
