Lot Description

Type 98 Shin Gunto
World War II

27.5" Nagasa (Blade Length). 38.5" overall with Tsuka (Hilt) and Saya (Scabbard). Shinogi-Zukuri style blade displaying an even Togari (Pointed) hamon line and featuring Type 98 Shin-Gunto style mounts. Brass Tsuba features four Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) spread to each corner with further Sakura adornments to the Fuchi and Kashira over beaded grounds. The Fuchi has a spring catch to secure the sword to the scabbard. Grip tape is the typical brown tone of wartime examples enclosing a rayskin wrap and a pair of triple Sakura Menuki. The Nakago (Tang) displays a Mei (Signature). Further signatures visible on the Tsuba, forward edge of the Tsuka wood core, and Fuchi. Comes in a brown painted steel Saya (Scabbard) with a wood core and a single mounting loop. The remnants of a leather lanyard are visible in the Kashira, but the sword lacks a Mekugi pin, rendering the hilt components loose. Kashira mounts a silver Mon (Family Crest). Nakago has been pierced in two locations for Mekugi pins, suggesting it may be an older blade mated to World War II style mounts.
