Lot Description

Rare US Springfield Model 1840 Musket in Original Flint
Mexican American War

.69 caliber. 42" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, brass pan, full length walnut musket stock. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock musket with brass blade front sight, sling swivels and trumpet head ramrod. Lock with worn {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US forward of cock and marked in three vertical lines at the tail with SPRING/FIELD/1841. Breech with V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs and dated 1841 on the tang. Lock with correct "perfect circle" rounded reinforced cock, "S" marked top jaw and "B1" marked cock. Lock remains in original flint with a variety of small letter and number marks on the internal components. The weak remnants of a cartouche are visible on the stock flat. Slightly more than 30,000 of these flintlock muskets, the last of such guns to be produced officially at Springfield, were manufactured between 1840 and 1844. Nearly all were subsequently altered to percussion, making original flint examples extremely scarce. This appears to be a correct, original flint example of these scarce and desirable US military flintlock. {ANTIQUE}
