Lot Description

Philadelphia Style Silver Hilted Officer's Saber with Eagle Head Quillon S-Guard and Silver Washed Copper Scabbard
War of 1812

29.5" curved single edged blade with a 23" stopped median fuller. Blade 1.4" wide at ricasso. Overall length 34.75" with a 5" hilt. Palm swell checkered bone grip with Eagle Head quillon 4.75" S-shape silver guard and flat pommel cap. There may have been a knuckle bow at one time that is now missing but only some roughness at the rear of the bottom quillon suggests this and no indication of a bow connecting to the pommel cap is noted. Guard with langets, plain on the reverse and chased in the form of a spread-winged eagle on the obverse. Pommel cap set with red, white and blue glass "stones". Blade decorated with blued finish and gilt highlights with foliate and martial themes, with the reverse decorated with spread-winged American Eagle. Embossed silver washed copper scabbard decorated with geometric and patriotic martial themes with two suspension rings and two sword hanger snaps that have traces of leather on them. An attractive Philadelphia sword that likely dates to the turn of the 19th century that is worthy of a careful cleaning to improve its overall appearance.
